Program Overview
The Grass Valley-Nevada City (GVNC) Cultural District is inviting applications for funding for small-scale community-centered projects and initiatives led by Individual Artists and Culture Bearers, Arts Organizations, and Collaboratives.
The GVNC Cultural District will support projects that contribute to its vibrancy and align with the Cultural District’s mission to:
Grow and sustain authentic arts and culture opportunities in Nevada County
Increase the visibility of, and support for, local artists
Strengthen the creative economy by promoting socio-economic and cultural diversity through inclusive arts programs
Increase community participation in local arts and culture
Award
This program is funded by the GVNC Cultural District with a total of $30,000 available to grant:
$15,000 allocated to individual artists (15 grants awarded)
$15,000 allocated to organizations/collaboratives (3 grants awarded)
Grants will be awarded in the following categories:
$1,000 for Individual Artists and Culture Bearers
This grant is for professional artists and culture bearers, not hobbyists, for whom at least 40% of their income is derived from their art practice.
$5,000 for Arts Organizations / Collaboratives
Arts Organizations / Collaboratives must have an annual operating budget of no more than $200,000 annually to be eligible to apply.
At least 60% of the budget must go to directly paying artists / culture bearers.
Eligibility Requirements
Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate meaningful community engagement and align with our mission. Applicants for the GVNC Cultural District Mini-Grant must meet the following criteria:
Individual Artists/Arts Organizations/Collaboratives must have their primary residency in the GVNC Cultural District.
Recognizing that members of the cultural workforce who serve and work within the Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District live beyond its formal boundaries, we are expanding our reach to include surrounding unincorporated areas on the western side of the Sierra. All addresses within Nevada County Supervisorial Districts 1 through 4 are eligible.
Artists of all arts disciplines are welcome to apply, including but not limited to: Visual Arts, Crafts, Literary Arts, Performing Arts (Dance, Theatre, Music, etc.), Media Arts, Traditional and Folk Arts, Social Practice, and Community-Based Arts.
Eligible projects may include new or existing events, publications, screenings, exhibitions, workshops, performances, and other initiatives that incorporate community engagement and contribute to the district's cultural vitality.
Lead applicant must be 18 years of age or older. Arts organizations/collaboratives may be in service of or include youth.
If you received a grant through Upstate California Creative Corps you are not eligible to apply for this round of funding.
Funding Restrictions
The California Cultural District Program is a program of the California Arts Council. Please refer to our What We Do Not Fund document when considering your application. This aligns with California Arts Council’s own funding guidance.
