Dark Skies
In partnership with Town of Truckee, Truckee Cultural District has spent the past two years creating a Dark Skies Community Education and Awareness Campaign through arts, culture, education and destination stewardship. As a result of these efforts, Truckee has joined and embraced the Dark Skies Movement, committing to the protection of our night sky as a shared natural and community resource. In 2025 the annual night skies photography contest “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” received 138 submissions in three categories Professional, Amateur and Youth, promoting awareness and the importance of reducing light pollution and preserving the wonder of the night sky. Program continuation in 2026 includes exploration of formal Dark Skies certification while continuing cultural programming, regional partnerships, and community education.
