USING AND MANAGING THE ASSET LIBRARY
Our Squarespace Asset Library is quickly becoming unusable with over 4500 images.
Here are some BEST PRACTICES for all to observe.
1- Rename the image BEFORE uploading it to the website. Give it a name that will be useful in the search feature for future access and re-use. (example: “County Fair 2024” versus “Social Post Tuesday” )
2- Give the image suitable ALT TEXT in the image dialog box when using it on a webpage. This is to boost SEO. Crawlers do not see JPGs or PNGs, only their titles or alt text. ALT TEXT does not need to match the image title. (Example: Title: County Fair 2024 ALT TEXT: Don’t miss the fair this year! ) ALT TEXT is not generally visable on the site. It is only surfaced if the user’s settings ask for it, say for someone with visual impairment.
3- If you EDIT an image you have uploaded from within the site image editor, a new version will be saved in the library. If you don’t need the original version, delete it.
(See the folder in the asset library for LEADERSHIP ROUND TABLE. This is what happens when duplicates and titles aren’t managed. The image title “Artboard 1” or “Squarespace Banner” will not be helpful in a search for particular banner art.)
4- Note that while images may appear identical, the system will retrieve them based on their Image Title. The system will not know to use a similar looking image.
5- Deleting an image WILL delete it from the webpage, but not immediately. It can take several days or weeks to disappear, depending on when the site is indexed. If needed, we can request re-indexing to more quickly remove an image.
6- The folders are not automatic. I have created the folders you see in the asset library, and begun to populate them. Folders can also have sub-folders. Please select and add your images to a folder that exists, or create a new folder.
7- When an image is moved to a FOLDER in the library, it no longer appears under ALL FILES.
8- Please take some time to select and move images from the past. Note that if you delete an old Culture Connection image in the library, it will still appear in the packaged PDF version. However, if that image was used on the Culture Connection PAGE itself, as a link, it will be deleted and be replaced by a “missing image” icon. As long as the original live Culture Connection Email is being accessed by members, all images must remain in the library. I think we should remove them after 1 year.
9- Going forward, if you need an NCAC logo, a Miners Foundry Logo, or a Membership Graphic, for example, navigate to what you need in the library instead of uploading another duplicate.
