Truckee Cultural District Updates

October was a busy month for Truckee Cultural District. Highlights included presenting at Good Morning Truckee with Truckee Chamber, on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion alongside Nevada County Arts Council; meeting new artists at our Creatives Meetup at Gallery 5830’; watching the live launch of the Americans for the Arts—Arts & Economic Prosperity 6; attending the unveiling of “Flying Fish” at Donner Lake, and this year’s Nevada County Economic Summit in Grass Valley. |

November is National American Indian Heritage Month. The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans. As the Wašiw (Washoe) creation story goes, the Washoe people were brought to their homeland surrounding Lake Tahoe by Gewe (the coyote) and told that this area is the place that the goddess, Nentašu, meant for them to be. Washoe tradition indicates their homeland has always included Lake Tahoe. Archeologists trace the Washoe presence at Lake Tahoe back at least two thousand years, with the lake and approximately 10,000 square miles of land surrounding the lake once home to and the responsibility of Lake Tahoe’s original locals. GROUNDBREAKING NEWS: Governor Newsome Signs Groundbreaking Law Promoting Affordable Housing for Artists Working in Cultural Districts, Helping Set Protections for the State’s Cultural Treasures and Greater Economic Opportunity for Artists. Nevada County Arts Council (NCAC) hosted members from the joint Committee on the Arts at 'Uba Seo last fall. Here NCAC is with Assemblymember Tasha Boerner, and Senator Ben Allan, along with other local and arts representatives. As the inaugural stop on their State-wide Cultural District Tour, Assemblymember Boerner and Senator Allan listened deeply as NCAC shared experiences, insights, and considerations moving forward since receiving both Truckee and Grass Valley - Nevada City Cultural District Designations. We were heard! On October 12, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 812 - which was authored by Assemblymember Tasha Boerner. This bill allows local governments to reserve affordable housing in cultural districts for artists at risk of being displaced by rising housing costs. This sets protections for the State's cultural treasures and provides greater economic opportunity for Artists. The first of its kind in the state, AB 812 provides a tool for local governments whose jurisdictions include either a state or locally-designated cultural district and who recognize the need to retain the artists and cultural workers who make these neighborhoods unique. “Artists are the lifeblood of our cultural communities and help preserve the cultural footprint of the region,” says Assemblymember Boerner. At the October Creatives Meetup held at Gallery 5830’, we caught up with Michelle Erskine from Art Truckee. Anyone that knows Michelle knows she always has a lot going on, is deeply invested in the downtown community and is a Truckee mover and shaker. We couldn’t think of anyone more perfect for the November Business Spotlight. Very few people in Truckee are as talented across creative disciplines. Erskine is a visual artist, performs on stage dance and comedy routines, runs an entertainment company and the list goes on. |

When asked at what point she realized her calling in life she responded with, ”I've always been an artist, expressing myself through multiple art forms such as dance, music, drawing and sketching, printmaking, photography and more. I fell in love with photography in the 5th grade when I received my first polaroid camera for my birthday. I started off in a more journalistic style being on the school yearbook and newspaper. I was so inspired by the things and people around me. I always knew I wanted to do something that was bigger than myself, something that would make an impact and make life a little brighter.” |

Art Truckee is a new business model for Michelle Erskine, a woman who has been innovating business models in Truckee for a long time. We asked what her latest creative vision is for Art Truckee. “I love supporting and bringing people together and have always tried to be an active member in my community. My focus continues to be providing more opportunities not only for myself, but also for other artists, entertainers and women entrepreneurs in general. My vision for Art Truckee keeps evolving over time, but always maintains the foundation of bringing artists together, being a meeting place for collaboration and a home for showcasing all art forms. Art Truckee is a non-profit and we hope over time to be able to expand offerings and support throughout the community.” This thoughtful response defines who Erskine is and what she contributes to our vibrant downtown. |

We could not agree more when she shared what she loves most about the Truckee creative community. “We have an abundance of high level talent and diverse art forms in our area that is usually only seen or experienced in a large city.” |

After struggling as a business owner and mother through COVID, Michelle Erskine did what she does so well and found a perfect new spot to start re-inventing herself and rethink ways to continue to grow as an artist. When asked about the new gallery space, she shared, “The new gallery layout is different, and fresh and it feels amazing to be back open. There is color back on the walls and brightness shining through the windows. I am so grateful for this day.” |

The Economic Impact of Spending by Nonprofit Arts and
Culture Organizations and Their Audiences Nevada County Arts Council announced this month local and national results for their Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), Americans for the Arts’ sixth national study of the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry. Building on its 25-year legacy, the highly regarded Arts & Economic Prosperity® series once again documents in unprecedented scope and detail the economic power that the arts and culture wield. Across 373 participating communities representing all 50 states and Puerto Rico these communities range in geography (Alaska to Florida to Maine to Hawaii), population (4,000 to 4.7 million), and population density (rural, suburban, and large urban). Nevada County Arts Council announced that the county’s arts and culture industry generated $66M in economic activity in across the county in 2022, according to the newly released economic and social impact study. That economic activity, $32M in spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and $34M in event-related spending by their audiences, supported 1,359 jobs and generated $13M in local, state, and federal government revenue. Spending by arts and culture audiences generates valuable commerce to local merchants, a value-add that few other industries can compete with. For more information

Unveiling of Donner Lake Sculpture “Flying Fish”: Trash to Treasure Thanks to artists Yustina Salnikova and Joel Dean from Building 180, an all-inclusive art production and consulting agency that specializes in creating intricate art installations from start to finish, trash literally became treasure. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, locals came together to honor the unveiling of the new Donner Lake sculpture, crafted from an unconventional source: a heap of trash retrieved from the depths of Donner Lake. A fish form emerged from the debris pile, fashioned from an amalgamation of anchors, sunglasses, boat bumpers, buoys, and traffic cones. The Donner fish sculpture stands as a testament to the power of unity in preserving and nurturing our environment. Its presence will serve as a continual reminder to be mindful and deliberate in our actions.

GBT raises awareness about our local nonprofits and all that they do to support this community. In 2022, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation raised over $730,500 throughout the campaign! These funds serve the people, animals, and environment that make Tahoe Truckee such a special place to live, play, and visit. |
