Madelyn Helling Library, 980 Helling Way, Nevada City This is a special opportunity for our local creative community! California Arts Council members and staff will be here, in person, to conduct the public business of our state arts agency — and to hear from us about why arts, culture, creativity, and public investment matter. We would love to see strong participation from Nevada County artists, arts organizations, creative businesses, civic leaders, cultural workers, residents, and supporters. For those who would like to address the Council, we’re happy to share a few public comment examples. Be sure to make your own—these are not designed to be spoken verbatim! GVNC Mini Grant Recipient — Hollie Dilley

GVNC: What is your medium? Dilley: I like to work with so many different materials. Each body of work I make usually has a common theme. I would call my work, Mixed media sculpture. I use a blend of Taxidermy, ceramics, fibers, resin, metal, wood, found objects and lighting.
GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling? Dilley: I like to work with so many different materials. Each body of work I make usually has a common theme. I would call my work, Mixed media sculpture. I use a blend of Taxidermy, ceramics, fibers, resin, metal, wood, found objects and lighting.

GVNC: Tell us about your creative process. Dilley: My creative process is somewhat organic and I like to lead by finding imperfections and flaws in the animals I taxidermy. If there is an abrasion or imperfection in the hide or skeleton it gives me room to be creative with one of my chosen mediums.

GVNC: What inspires you? Dilley: I am inspired by the natural world around me and the animals I surround myself with. I enjoy finding natural materials and patterns in nature that I can reproduce to use elsewhere in my work.

GVNC: What are you most proud of? Dilley: I am most proud of my family and watching how my work reflects on their creativity and understanding of the world they see. I am also very proud of my store @crushnevadacity and what it brings to everyone who lives and visits our town. I try to blend rollerskating and the culture it rounds itself with. I try to curate a unique shopping experience that brings together goods made by me, custom clothing and unique handmade roller-skates. The vault gallery is also a spotlight on my more fine art pieces that I have available at Crush.

GVNC: What do you love best about our creative community? Dilley: I love our creative community in Nevada county because it is so diverse. From the film festival to a learning hands on experience at the curious forge. We have wonder docent for finding art supplies locally to learning new skills at wolf craft collective. There are numerous galleries including chambers project and several stars gallery.

GVNC: Name two Nevada County artists you admire and why. Dilley: Jori Jori is amazing. The moment I met her, I felt like I met a kindred spirit- her work is whimsical, fun, and detail oriented. Ursula Young has been on my radar for years now, she is adaptable and always find ways to fit in and shift with the times. When murals are out of grasps, she makes sticker packs. She volunteers her time to paint trash barrels for festivals, etc. She is just always finding ways to tie her art in with the community and I admire that.
GVNC: Tell us more about what’s coming up for you? Dilley: I just found out that I will be the recipient of this year’s Long Table Visual Arts Award on Saturday, May 16. Following that I will have two opening repections for my most recent body of work (supported in part by the GVNC mini grant!) Sweet Tooth, Friday June 5 from 6-9PM in the Grand Lounge at The National. We will have a DJ and a sweet surprise! Then the following weekend at we will have an opening reception at The Vault inside of my shop Crush, in downtown Nevada City, where the exhibition will remain on display.
