Student Art Now On DisplayA huge thank you to everyone who joined us on October 22 for the 2nd annual s.t.e.A.m opening reception at the Tahoe Truckee Airport. If you haven’t seen this exhibit yet, there’s still time! The show runs through mid-January 2026 and features imaginative works by local youth exploring science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Featured works include Gone Boarding, Watch Us Soar, Scarab Beetles, Pinecone Contour Drawings, Warming Stripes, Nature Mandalas, and pieces from the Truckee High School Visual Arts class. We are grateful to all the students for their incredible talent. Special thanks to Molly Moore for her dedication as lead curator for this exhibit, and to the teachers, artists, and mentors who guided and inspired these young creators.

DEWBEYÚMUWEɁ Park Opens!Truckee officially welcomed its newest public park with a ribbon-cutting celebration this last month! DEWBEYÚMUWEɁ Park, located at 10257 West River Street. The park’s name was chosen by the Washoe Tribe and translates to “the water running out.” The phrase honors the Truckee River as the only outlet flowing from Lake Tahoe, connecting the name to our region’s natural landscape and cultural heritage. Incredible public art installations by local artists bring creativity to the riverfront, we encourage you to go check it out and spend a few moments by the river. On October 11, I was invited to attend Poet Laureate Kat Terrey’s Youth Voices Workshop at the Tahoe Literary Festival in Tahoe City. There, we read the poem Planet Krypton by Lynn Emanuel and were given time to write. As a student poet, I’m sharing the ideas formed through the workshop’s guidance. I found my interest gravitating towards the topic that was, for the author, a current event. Recently, having begun reading into Chicana literature and the relationship between Latinos and the border, I was inspired to write about my own relationship with the United States and immigration. Application Cycle Open through November 14The Truckee Chamber of Commerce recently announced the opening of the 2026 application cycle for the Truckee Core Values Fund. This community event fund, established in collaboration with the Town of Truckee and administered by the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, is designed to support local nonprofits in the region or events that partner with nonprofit organizations by providing essential marketing resources for local-focused events. Events must align with at least one of the five Truckee Core Values: Healthy Lifestyle, Family-Friendly, Natural Beauty, Community-Minded, and Arts, Culture, and History. Events must take place within Truckee Town Limits in 2026. Apply now through November 14 through the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation's Online Grant System. Not sure if you're eligible? TCD: For decades, you have been the go-to photographer for large events in the region. Tell us about your photography background and how you got into doing special event photography. RETTING: Growing up in NYC, my photographic career started decades ago, shooting professional sports, commercial & advertising, photo-journalism, portraits, entertainment, people and events, etc. Shooting in clubs, the entertainment was exciting. I worked with many celebrities, met lot’s of people, made great connections, and it paid fairly well. As a young person I liked being where the action was, liked shooting people, and in NYC there was plenty of both!
TCD: What is your favorite medium to work in and shoot? RETTING: These days it’s small format digital photography. In the past it’s been small, medium, and large format film photography.
TCD: Recently, you were selected as one of three judges for the 2025 Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Photo Contest. How was that experience for you? RETTING: It was really eye opening to see such talent and passion for the Dark Skies discipline within the general populous. I was surprised and impressed to witness the photographic aptitude which the younger photographers portrayed.
TCD: What is your dream job as a local photographer? RETTING: I don’t know about “Dream” job, but I’d like to get more into landscape (that’s if I can wake up early enough!), architectural, and back into still-life shooting.
