GVNC: What is your medium?

Cello Joe: My medium is vibrational alchemy. I take the 18th-century wooden curves of the cello and collide them with 21st-century urban beatboxing. Using a loop station as my canvas, I layer live cello melodies, percussive vocal textures, and deep bass lines into a symphony of sound. It’s classical music that went to a rave and came back with a funky heart.

GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling?

Cello Joe: It was the moment I realized I didn't have to choose between the orchestra and the dance floor. I grew up playing classical cello, but I had a beatboxer’s soul. The "aha!" moment happened when I plugged my cello into a loop pedal for the first time. Suddenly, I wasn't just a solo player; I was a one-man band, a conductor, and a DJ all at once. I realized my calling was to reinvent the cello for a modern, rhythmic world.

GVNC: Tell us about your creative process.

Cello Joe: I "paint" with sound in real-time. My process is a conversation between my bow and my breath. I start with a "sketch"—a plucked bass line or a vocal rhythm—and loop it to create a sonic foundation. Then I add layers of "pigment": rich harmonic chords and sharp, percussive "splatters" of beatboxing. It’s a high-wire act of live improvisation where the composition builds in front of the audience’s eyes and ears until it’s a towering wall of sound.

GVNC: What inspires you?

Cello Joe: The intersection of nature and technology. I am deeply inspired by the cadence of movement—the rhythm of pedaling a bicycle across a continent or the flow of a river. I love the challenge of taking an organic, wooden instrument and merging it with electronic sounds. The rugged beauty of the Sierra foothills constantly finds its way into the textures of my music.

GVNC: What are you most proud of?

Cello Joe: I’m most proud of my "Pedal Powered" tours. I’ve traveled over 10,000 miles by bicycle, carrying my cello, both solo and with a group called the Pleasant Revolution, performing off-grid shows powered by human effort. Proving that high-level art can be sustainable and mobile—while connecting with people on a literal grassroots level—is my greatest achievement. Our 2007 Pleasant Revolution tour to Mexico actually started in North San Juan and our first stop was the Yuba River! I’ve toured by bicycle in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia.

GVNC: What do you love best about our creative community?

Cello Joe: There is a unique "wildness" to the Nevada County creative scene. People here don't just consume art; they live it. Whether it's a festival in the woods or a gallery opening in town, there is a deep appreciation for the avant-garde and the handmade. This community values authenticity and isn't afraid of artists who break the mold.

GVNC: Name two Nevada County artists you admire and why.

• Toni Mikulka-Chang: I may be a bit biased because she is my wife, but I absolutely love her giant puppet performances! 

• Thomas Spellman: Not on is Thomas an amazing musical collaborator on guitar and bass, but he also runs Tree Link and provides high speed internet to folks in remote parts of the county. 

GVNC: What’s coming up for you?

Cello Joe: I have a show on January 17 — Cello Joe w/ DJ K. Bueno at Crazy Horse Saloon & Grill, I’m playing at the Western Lights Festival in Reno February 19/20 2026, and I’ll be heading to Costa Rica for Envision Festival February 22 2026 through March 2 2026. In March, I’ll be playing at Moody’s Bistro and Beats in Truckee from March 26-28 2026. 

I also run a full service wedding DJ business as “Cello Joe Productions” offering live cello, full sound and lighting, DJ services, and I have many weddings booked in 2026.
