In Memoriam - Bill GainerIt is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing of local writer, editor, promoter, publicist, friend and poet Bill Gainer. Known for the openness of his confessional poetry and recognized as one of the founding contributors to the modern movement of "After Hours Poetry". Bill Gainer was a co-founder and board member of the Nevada County Poetry Series, a participant at Sierra Poetry Festival, and an often sought after reader. His impact on the regional poetry scene is indelible. “I have this longstanding love affair with language and the clumsiness of it. Because of that I have fallen in love with the pursuit of clarity… That is why I love the short poem so much.” ~ Bill Gainer

GVNC: What is your medium? Greene: Music and Art- i.e., Photography including manipulating my images and Musical instruments such as hand drums, shakers, gongs, hand pans, pianos, etc - in other words, things that I can strike, shake, play and control thru planned and unplanned interaction with them.
GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling? Greene: I was very young and curious, and my family was very creative in the musical and visual arts. My father and grandfather were both fantastic piano players and gramps was a great photographer. My dads mom was a super-creative artist and my moms mom was in theater and education, and my mom was a teacher for most of her life. They all inspired me to explore and discover music and art and its significance to humanity. Gramps supported my desire to create images by giving me a decent camera when I was pretty young. I never took formal lessons on any of them- they all came naturally and brought me and friends lots of joy. Then I discovered percussion and it has taken me on a 32 year wild ride!

GVNC: Tell us about your creative process. Greene: I like to believe that we are limitless in what we can learn and do, so that served me well as I explored music and art. Like pachinko balls, we tend to fall into certain channels where we sit comfortably. The things I enjoy are also the things I spend the most time doing, even though it can be costly!
GVNC: What inspires you? Greene: People who commit to the pursuit of their passion, breaking through the challenges, especially when it’s a difficult path. I’m inspired by those who selflessly share their gifts and want to empower others, not shine a light on themselves.
GVNC: What are you most proud of? Greene: I am most proud when I inspire, assist and empower others in finding joy through creative processes, especially when they have shut down or don’t believe that they can, in fact, succeed. It’s happened over the past 30 or so years and it feels great to see others succeed.

GVNC: What do you love best about our creative community? Greene: The Nevada County Artist Community feels like an extended family, sharing and caring about each other in spite of our differences. There is a unified common goal. I sense that everyone wants everyone else to succeed. That’s just COOL !!

GVNC: Name two Nevada county artists you admire and why. Greene: In the Musical Arts, I’d say Kit Bailey, a local drummer who teaches drums to multiple generations, going the extra mile to help kids and adults alike. He has mad skills and is well liked around NC County. In the Visual Arts…. Julian Vadas, a painter of "elaborate, organic abstracts” that tickles my brain… And Steve Solinsky, a photographer who captures places and the natural world in a way that has inspired me ever since seeing his work in Lake Tahoe when I worked in a fine-art gallery that represented his work.
GVNC: What’s coming up for you? Greene: I’ve opened up a music shop focusing on unique world percussion, much of it from my collecting and representing importers and manufacturers for the past 30+ years. I also have started to offer classes in hand drumming and host drum circles, helping new and intermediate drummers discover more about how rhythm “works” so they can be friends with the drum, or shakers, or handpans, etc… The space is unique and intimate, somewhat limited in size but powerful in its execution from what visitors have told me. There are events happening at times, Tuesday - Saturday early evenings, as well. A monthly calendar is available. Upcoming events will include mini concerts, guest teachers offering classes & workshops, art shows and meeting space with a seating capacity of around 25 or so people. The shop is open now but there is still lots to do! Grand Opening on Friday, July 10 with Ribbon Cutting from 5:30-7pm!
