Last month alongside community members, local leaders, arts advocates and library staff we celebrated California Arts Council’s 50th Birthday. As the Local Partner to the Statewide Agency for the Arts, we are grateful to California Arts Council for 50 years of championing the arts and culture of California.

It’s our turn to give back. Now, more than ever, California Arts Council needs us to show up for the arts!

We are at a critical moment for arts funding. That is why we are urging you to take a few minutes today to support a vital statewide budget ask that will directly impact our rural communities.

$50 million for the California Arts Council through the 50 in 50 campaign—This request marks the California Arts Council’s 50th anniversary by calling for a meaningful restoration of state investment in arts and culture.

Importantly for Nevada County, this includes funding for California Cultural Districts — the program that supports our work in both the Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District and the Truckee Cultural District.

For us, this funding is not abstract. It helps keep our office doors open in both our Cultural Districts. It allows us to serve our artists, creative businesses, venues, chambers, downtowns, cultural partners, tourism partners, and the wider creative economy across our region. It is the infrastructure behind the year-round work that makes state designation meaningful on the ground.

After ten years of dedicated leadership, Nevada County Arts & Culture Executive Director Eliza Tudor has announced her departure from the organization.

Over the past decade, Eliza has been a driving force behind arts and culture initiatives throughout Nevada County, helping secure funding, build partnerships, support artists and cultural organizations, and elevate the role of the arts as an essential part of community life. Her leadership has strengthened our region's creative ecosystem and left a lasting impact that will be felt for years.

GVNC: Who are the members of the Nevada County Playwrights Collective?

NCPC: Nelle Engoron, Kimberly Cloudwalker, Drew Barclay, Sandy Kasten, Robin Wallace, Chel Svendsgaard, Betsy Johnson, Sands Hall,

GVNC: What is your medium?

NCPC: Playwriting

GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling?

NCPC: This is different for each member of our collective, although most of us have been enchanted by theatre since childhood.

GVNC: What inspires you?

NCPC: This varies from writer to writer, but common themes include current events and issues, how history resonates with these, as well as family relationships, and of course love.

GVNC: What are you most proud of?

NCPC: The Nevada County Playwrights Collective was formed a little over a year ago. In that short time, we have come together with other local theatre artists, technicians, and volunteers to put together the upcoming Showcase festival.

GVNC: What do you love best about our creative community?

NCPC: Our creative community is genuinely supportive of each others' work. Our playwrights group provides each member with constructive feedback and information about available resources to improve our skills.

GVNC: Name two Nevada County artists you admire and why.

NCPC: First is Laughter Shock Improv. Kimberly Ewing does a fabulous job of outreach to the community. They incorporate local personalities and issues as well as universal themes in their work, and make it hilarious and fun.

InConcert Sierra. They bring high caliber national and international musicians to our rural county. It’s a world-class act providing incredible music rarely heard in smaller communities.
