GVNC: What is your medium? DaCRe: Painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, ceramics.
GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling? DaCRe: I have always been a curious person which has led me down many paths- all of which inform my artistic practice today. Graduate school set me on my current path because it allowed me to flush out a lot of ideas for three years in a big off-campus studio in Tucson, AZ.
GVNC: Tell us about your creative process. DaCRe: I turn a critical lens onto society at large and then filter what I collect into my imagery, which often carries my dark sense of humour and bright color palette to soften the blow.
GVNC: What inspires you? DaCRe: Authors like Eduardo Galleano, Naomi Klein and Howard Zinn opened my eyes to a behind-the-scenes glimpse into global politics and how it all intertwines.
GVNC: What are you most proud of? DaCRe: My sister Kim and her trajectory in life - a sort of rags-to-riches story. Very inspiring, although I don’t think I’ve ever told her that directly. She is the owner of Biscuit Bitch in Seattle, WA.
GVNC: What do you love best about our creative community? DaCRe: Its existence.
GVNC: Name two Nevada county artists you admire and why. DaCRe: Matt Gottschalk - his ability to think creatively outside the box. He recently threw a bunch of raw clay vessels for a few exhibitions where he allowed the reclamation process to occur over the span of the exhibition through the introduction of water inside plexiglas tanks- taking the clay back to its original structure. I thought it was a genius idea.
Joel Murnan - recently graduated from UC-Davis and is teaching with us at Sierra College. His sculptural works look like artifacts from a world that parallels ours but could be dug up from a disastrous past or something that was preserved in a toxic future. Very inspiring to experience.
GVNC: What’s coming up for you? DaCRe: One of my lithographs was just recently curated into a show In/Between, Within/Outside alongside Judy Chicago and Kara Walker at the Harnett Museum in Richmond, VA. A solo exhibition at the Kondos Gallery at Sacramento City College opening in mid-October and I was recently paired up with the artist Lupe Toscano from Art Explorers in Ft. Bragg, CA where I am making a piece that responds to his work and will be part of two group exhibitions at the Art Explorers gallery in Ft Bragg in November and Tahoe Gallery in February.
