“This year’s keynote event features former United States Poet Laureate Robert Hass and Guggenheim Fellow Brenda Hillman, two of the most influential figures in contemporary American poetry. Hass, a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, is widely celebrated for his lyrical engagement with landscape, memory, and public life. Hillman, known for her formally innovative and politically attentive work, has long been regarded as one of the country’s most original poetic voices.”

Welcome to National Poetry Month and Arts & Culture month for our county! The next free Creative Writing Workshop at the Truckee Library, 10031 Levon Ave, is on May 1, Friday morning from 10:30-noon. These workshops are open to all ages and all levels of experience. Join me! At our tenth anniversary of Sierra Poetry Festival this year, I will be introducing the winners from our two county open mics along with youth poets for the Community Voices segment of the day. I will also be presenting a workshop in the afternoon, Power and Truth: New Entrances into Writing Poems.
On Friday, April 24, Writers in the Woods presents our California Poet Laureate Lee Herrick reading in Incline Village at the Prim Library at 6 pm. This is a special opportunity to hear him share his work. I highly recommend Lee’s performance even for people who don’t “get” poetry. Reading poetry outdoors highlights the healing power of nature, and on April 25th Poetry in Parks don’t miss this unique reading by local students and poets at Empire Mine State Park in Nevada City, 1-3 pm. On May 14th, the next Tangled Roots Open Mic & Reading series at Alibi Ale Works in downtown Truckee will feature local author and Poet Laureate Emerita Molly Fisk reading from her latest book release, Walking Wheel, a novel in verse. This event runs 6-7:30 pm at 10069 Bridge St, Truckee. |
