October marks Arts & Humanities Month, and we’re excited to kick it off with big news locally and statewide. On the state level, CA for the Arts has announced that the 4th Annual CA Arts & Culture Summit will take place on April 20, 2026, under the theme “Boundless Creativity & Culture: The Essence of Freedom.”

|
Here in Truckee, we’ll celebrate a milestone on October 15 at 4:00pm with the official opening and ribbon cutting of DewbeyúmuweɁ Park on West River Street. The new park, nestled along the Truckee River, will feature three public art installations and hopes to become a vibrant gathering place for our community. |

Meet our Truckee Cultural District Intern: Alexis Cota

In September, Truckee High School senior Alexis Cota started his journey working with Truckee Cultural District Program Manager Kellie Cutler and Nevada County Poet Laureate Karen Terrey. Alexis is passionate about reading, writing and poetry and has been actively lending his voice as a youth literary artist in a variety of events throughout the county over the past 4 weeks. Join us on October 22 from 5:00-7:00pm for the opening reception of the latest Truckee Tahoe Airport District (TTAD) Art at the Airport installation, featuring local student artwork centered around the theme of STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This exhibit showcases how students creatively blend these disciplines to explore the intersection of art and innovation. Enjoy refreshments, live music and a hands-on STEAM project while supporting our Tahoe Truckee Unified School District student artists. . The STEAM Exhibit will be on display until January 2026. This opening reception will serve as the October Creatives Meetup for the Truckee Tahoe Arts Alliance and Truckee Cultural District.

We’re excited to officially announce the winners of the 2025 Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Photo Contest. The Truckee Cultural District, along with Nevada County Arts Council, Town of Truckee, and City of Nevada City, are thrilled to celebrate the incredible photographers. The Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Photo Contest winning photos are now on display at various locations in Truckee and moving to the Miners Foundry Cultural Center in Nevada City starting November 3rd. The photography contest may have wrapped up (see our amazing winners below), but October’s night sky is one to watch. With “locals summer” in full swing the skies feel extra special each night. Here are some celestial happenings to look out for: this month is part of the final three consecutive supermoons of the year, with the Hunter's Moon being the first. The Hunter's Full Moon is on October 6, the Draconid meteor shower around October 8, the peak of the Orionid meteor shower on October 20–22, and Mercury at greatest eastern elongation on October 29. |
