We’re midway through summer, and the Truckee Cultural District has been buzzing with creative energy. Thank you to everyone who joined us at the opening reception of “Plein Air: A Collection of Local Landscapes,” the newest Art at the Airport exhibition on view now through mid-October at the Truckee Tahoe Airport.

Truckee Thursdays are in full swing, and we’re so grateful to the artists who have joined us with Truckee Tahoe Arts Alliance under the Cultural District tent so far—sharing their work, live demonstrations, and conversations with visitors. A big thank you to multimedia artist Sarah Manning, Nevada County Poet Laureate Karen Terrey, visual artist Todd Tanis, photographer Scott Thompson, landscape painter Ian Blackhall Scott, and blacksmith/woodworker Michael Ryan. Look for the Art Walk flags displayed in front of participating businesses and galleries as you stroll through town, meet local artists, and experience the vibrant art scene that makes Truckee so special. Grab a friend, take a walk, and get inspired—we’ll see you downtown!

Light of Day | August 1–31

Longtime collaborators, artists, LeeAnn Brook and Mike Snegg reunite for a nature-inspired exhibition, Light of Day, on view August 1–31 at Ridgeline Gallery in downtown Truckee. Join the artists at the opening reception on August 2 from 4–7pm and experience this stunning pairing of abstract landscapes and turned wood sculpture. 

Jasmine Wood is a California-based artist whose work is deeply inspired by the natural landscapes that have shaped her—from the Sierra Nevada to the Southern California coast. Currently completing her B.A. in Art at UCSB, she creates abstract pieces that translate the emotional and sensory experiences of outdoor spaces into vivid visual expressions.

As a plein air painter, Nancy Takaichi works on location to capture the unique light, patterns, and character of each landscape in a specific moment in time. With a B.A. in Art from DePauw University and continued study through workshops and peer collaboration, her work reflects a deep love of the outdoors and a commitment to telling the evolving story of place—currently on view at Piper J Gallery in Truckee.

Piper Johnson is a self-taught artist whose journey began in Lake Tahoe in the 1990s, where a love of skiing and a serendipitous introduction to painting led to a flourishing career in the arts. Known for her plein air oil paintings and textured abstracts, Piper now owns Piper J Gallery in Truckee, and the newly opened Ridgeline Gallery, where she curates regional fine art and collaborates with designers, realtors, and city partners to elevate Truckee as a destination for art and culture.

Inspired by the philosophies and techniques of the 19th century Hudson River School of artists, Ian Scott’s artistic vision is one of revival. He works to restore the classical landscape movement with a modern insight on preservation ethics and reverence for wild spaces. Ian’s goal is not to create a perfect likeness of wild places, rather to communicate the unique feeling of time and place. More often than not, his creative process involves skiing, hiking, or biking to plein air painting locations across the American West.
