From the Truckee Cultural District

Hello from the Truckee Cultural District! We welcomed May with the final day of highly attended Listening Sessions in Grass Valley-Nevada City; armed with community input we’re feeling ready for the next phase of Culture Forward, our plan for the future of arts, culture and creativity across Nevada County. Next up, a huge congratulations to Piper Johnson and Piper J Gallery, named Best Local Gallery in Tahoe Quarterly! We’re also thrilled to share that Piper is opening a brand-new space, Ridgeline Gallery, right in downtown Truckee—stay tuned for more details!

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month and National Photography Month, and many of our downtown galleries showcase stunning photographic works from talented regional artists regularly, as do so many of our local restaurants and businesses. We also recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder of the powerful connection between creativity and well-being. It’s proven that artistic expression helps reduce stress. This month also includes International Museum Day on May 18, and we’re tipping our hats to our local Museum of Truckee History (MoTH).  MoTH hosts events year-round, here are two May happenings to add to your calendar:

• May 13, 6–8 PM – History Talks: Truckee’s Chinese Railroad Story

• May 26, 10 AM–12 PM – Memorial Day Service with a historical vehicle display, hosted by Truckee Fire and VFW

While we’re taking a brief break from Creatives Meetups and opening receptions in May, we'll be back in full force in June for the return of Truckee Thursdays, with a weekly booth featuring local artists! Come find us on June 26!

ADVOCATING FOR THE ARTS
From the Sierra to the State Capitol

On April 22–23, our crew from Truckee and Nevada City joined forces with artists, cultural change-makers, and arts lovers from across California for two days in Sacramento including the 2025 Arts & Culture Summit, themed Health, Healing & Hope. Representing Truckee Cultural District was Program Manager Kellie Cutler, Carrie Haines of Truckee Arts Alliance, and a strong Nevada County Arts Council team including Executive Director Eliza Tudor, GVNC Cultural District Program Manager Diana Arbex, and Programs and Membership Coordinator Hannah Mosby.

On Arts Advocacy Day, Truckee youth advocate Leo Murrell of The Aspen Collective joined us as we took to the Capitol for a rally, press conference and then meetings with our state representatives to talk about the power of the arts in our community and to champion funding requests that recognize the arts as essential.

DARK SKIES ON DISPLAY
Student Art Exhibit

Student art on display at the Town of Truckee Exhibition Hall

Step into the night sky through the eyes of local 6th graders. Created by Sustainability Club students from Alder Creek Middle School and Sierra Expeditionary Learning School, this project was science, climate and arts advocacy based bringing awareness around the impacts of light pollution and the value of our Dark Skies in Truckee. On view now at the Town of Truckee Exhibition Hall, outside Council Chambers.

This exhibit was created in partnership with Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP), Truckee Cultural District and the Town of Truckee.

Opening Reception Recap

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Treescapes opening reception at the Truckee Tahoe Airport on April 29! We had a fantastic turnout and are so grateful for the community support. The exhibit features the work of ten talented local artists who live and work in the Truckee Cultural District. A special shoutout to Cori Elba—one of our featured artists—who brought the house down with her incredible musical and comedic performance.

Treescapes is on view daily through mid-July; stop by the airport to take it in!

The Treescapes Ten

Meet the ten incredible local artists behind Treescapes, the newest Art at the Airport exhibit at Truckee Tahoe Airport. Each artist brings a unique perspective on the natural world—through paint, photography, mixed media, and more. Their work explores the beauty, stillness, and stories rooted in the trees that surround us.
