We have also partnered with the Governor’s Office through their Move Your Body, Calm Your Mind initiative to bring you a special movement and mindfulness activation at the end of the Meetup, lead by Nevada County Arts Council’s Communications maven, Michaelyn. We took a moment with Haley Wright, Marketing & Media for the North Star House, in anticipation of this Month’s Creatives Meetup to learn more about what’s in store for the historic building. |

GVNC Cultural District: Tell us a brief history of the North Star House Wright: Designed in 1905 by famed architect Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed female architect, the North Star House was the home of celebrated author and illustrator Mary Hallock Foote and her husband Arthur De Wint Foote, the superintendent of the North Star Mine. Today, it stands as a living landmark - honoring the past while welcoming the community to gather, celebrate, and create new memories.
GVNC: What is the North Star House mission statement? Wright: Our mission is to restore North Star House as a cultural gathering center, bringing the magic of the arts, theater, literature, history and music to generations of children, youth, and adults as well as providing a unique environment that nourishes the creative spirit.
GVNC: How do you hope to serve the community? Wright: We aim to be a cornerstone of connection. Offering a beautiful and welcoming space for cultural programming, art shows, music, classes, celebrations, and public events.
GVNC: Any exciting things on the horizon for the North Star? Wright: We’re incredibly excited about the next chapter: we’re nearing completion of the restoration of the entire first floor, which is a huge milestone years in the making. Next, we’ll begin work on the upstairs spaces, which will eventually become an art gallery, along with multiple workshop spaces.
GVNC: Any highlights of staff or board members? Wright: The North Star House is guided by a dedicated team of staff, board members, and volunteers committed to preserving its history and expanding its role as a cultural and community hub. A special highlight is our Artist-in-Residence, Jen McGuire, whose work and presence bring fresh creative energy to the House. Jen’s art and leadership play a key role in shaping our future arts programming.
