Art in Nature Installation Artists

Andres Amador - Calling himself an Earthscape artist, a title that “encompasses both the work and suggests new possibilities” Amador is best known for creating large-scale artworks across the landscape. Prefering to create with local materials that dissolve back into nature, his work has been featured on beaches and in forests around the world and across the US.

His installation on Hirschman Trail: “Connections” uses felled logs and debris to create an interactive mycelial web. The installation can be found about 1 mile from the Hirschman Trail trailhead on Cement Hill in Nevada City.

Frida Ticehurst - A multimedia artist and designer, Ticehurst combines her love of nature, color and pattern into this installation. Using cyanotype printing and native plants found along the trail, “Kin Tapestry” waves in the breeze along the Cascade Canal.

The installation can be found about 1 mile from the Cascade Canal Trail trailhead on Gracie Road in Nevada City (on the section of trail that passes through Woodpecker Wildlife Preserve).

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

This ballet, based on Lewis Carroll’s characters from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass tells the coming of age story of Alice who, at 17 years old, embarks on an adventure that commences with the refusal of a marriage proposition, a tumble down a rabbit hole, and the defiance of the Jabberwock. Interpreted and directed by Yelena Holt, staged by eight choreographers from across California, performed by dancers of all ages, brings to life characters out of Carroll’s novels and will lead its audiences on an adventure filled with beauty, humor, and imagination.

O Mother Gaia - The World of Gary Snyder

This is the first feature-length film documenting the life and work of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet/activist Gary Snyder. A participant in the famed 1955 Six Gallery poetry reading in San Francisco that launched the Beat era (and the careers of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac), Snyder later lived and studied in Japan, becoming a Zen teacher.

Rose Paratore’s work can be seen as an exploration and nod to early Abstract Expressionism. Numerous underlayers of color and lace-like patterns peek through; there are shapes similar to children’s wooden building blocks - one shape holding another or falling and tumbling. Words are placed like a whisper. Both light and dark shadows dance with one another, adding to the movement.
