Earlier this month we hosted the 2026 Poetry Out Loud County Championships at the Rood Center. This is the first year that students from Truckee have been able to participate, thanks to mentorship from Nevada County Poet Laureate Karen Terrey.

You can see photos from the event, learn more about Poetry Out Loud, and find out about this years finalists here.

The Nevada County finalists have been invited to present their poems at the 10th annual Sierra Poetry Festival, taking place on Saturday, April 18 at The Center for the Arts.

GVNC Mini-Grant Spotlight

Sierra Theatre Company

We took a moment with Michele Nesbit, Executive Director of the Sierra Theatre Company. Nesbit recently directed The Lover for Theatre by the Book and shares about her creative practice and this season’s upcoming theatrical performances.

GVNC: What is your medium?

Nesbit: Live performance, writing, painting, designing, producing.

GVNC: At what point in your life did you realize your calling?

Nesbit: I was very shy as a child and theatre allowed me to not be. I was always creative and used every opportunity to visually change the world around me through art. Theatre is the collaborative vehicle that allows me to express all the forms of creativity I have.

GVNC: Tell us about your creative process?

Nesbit: I work with a team of people to produce theatre. We meet and plan and ultimately put on a show.

GVNC: What inspires you?

Nesbit: The people I work with, the spaces we fill, the stories we tell, the past and future.

GVNC: What are you most proud of?

Nesbit: All of the projects I have been a part of, the good and the bad. Getting through a show is success no matter how it is received or how much money you make. There is so much that is learned and being able to acknowledge the progress is what I am proud of.

GVNC: What do you love best about our creative community?

Nesbit: This community is expansive and supportive. I love that we can give so much of our own art and also save room for others.

GVNC: Name two Nevada County artists you admire and why.

Nesbit: Jori Jori, she is a good friend and an amazing artist. She exudes her art just by breathing. Christi Colombo, fellow Sierra Theatre Company team mate, she is so passionate about her craft and that pushes me to continue to be better.

GVNC: Tell us about what events are coming up for you?

Nesbit: I just directed The Lover, for Theatre by the Book. We are also producing a children’s show that I am co-writing, Peach Boy and the Moon Princess, May 1st-9th, Nevada Theatre. And our main season shows are Cinderella, July 16th-August 8th, Nevada Theater and August: Osage County, Sept 4th-27th, Nevada Theatre.
