Yuba Lit is the reading series where literature lovers gather to celebrate the written word. During 2017 we were honored, as fiscal sponsor, to welcome Yuba Lit into our fold.
Yuba Lit was founded-- and is produced and hosted by-- memoirist and fiction writer Rachel Howard. Its mission is to foster our literary community by drawing on the wealth of serious writers who live here and hosting new perspectives and influences from Sacramento and the Bay Area. In partnership with Welcome Home Vets and through photography workshops with master photographer and United States veteran Michael Llewellyn, veterans together create an exhibition of work which is then shared with the community in a public space. Click here to learn more.

POETRY OUT LOUD
Poetry Out Loud is a National Recitation contest that, for us, begins right here in Nevada County classrooms. Through Poetry Out Loud we help high school students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Click here to learn more.
Belonging is the result of a California Arts Council grant called Artists Activating Communities. And that’s just what we’ll be doing through 2017 and 2018. Belonging is about our vulnerable mountain home and the people who tend it, love it and depend on it. Artist Ruth Chase and Cinematographer Radu Sava will mobilize your perspectives on our most sensitive issues, whether climate change or cannabis farming, land ethics or displacement - and what it means to be indigenous. A series of paintings and a film will emerge, manifesting as public art and tools for activism and bridge-building. Click here to learn more.
PROMOTING THE ARTS
We want Nevada County to become known as the ultimate cultural destination. For this to happen, our artists and arts organizations need to feel supported – and our community and our visitors need to know where to find them. We are the go-to resource for promoting the arts across Nevada County, with our online arts calendar, artist directory, call to artists page, newsletters and advocacy.
arts in education
Through our Arts Education and Literary Arts Committees we lead and support arts in education initiatives across Nevada County. We partner with California Alliance for Arts Education, California Arts Council, Dream a Difference, Poetry Out Loud and Nevada County Superintendent of Schools together with schools across Nevada County. If you are a student, teacher or inspired community member and want to get in involved, send us an email and we’ll be in touch. Click here to learn more.
Acting Up | pilot program
During 2017 Nevada County Arts Council rolled out a pilot series of workshops called Acting Up at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility, our County Jail. Over the course of three months, we commissioned experienced actor, director and playwright, John Deaderick, to teach theatre and acting to close to twenty inmates, varying in age from early twenties to early seventies, and serving time for a variety of offenses. The series was the result of an unusual partnership with California Lawyers for the Arts. Now, with funding from the County of Nevada we are thrilled to be able to offer this service to both men and women, working with veteran actor, Lois Ewing, in addition to John Deaderick.
